The Sarracenia, also known as the trumpet pitcher, is a genus of carnivorous plants native to the United States and Canada. These plants boast a stunning array of appearances, from the low-growing psittacina to the impressive leucophylla. The live carnivorous plant you will receive will have pitchers about as long as they will get, typically around 18 inches, depending on the variety.
Your plant will be shipped with its roots carefully wrapped in long-fibered sphagnum. If the potted option is selected, your plant will come in a carnivorous-plant-safe 2.5-inch plastic container. Sarracenias thrive when given sunny summers and winters that do not drop below freezing. They do well in bog gardens and terrariums.
For optimal growth, provide your Sarracenia with the following conditions:
Light: Full sun Soil: Pure peat, peat-sand mix, peat-perlite mix, or long-fiber sphagnum Fertilizing: Do not apply fertilizer. If grown indoors, fill the pitcher with water and drop in bugs, dried bloodworms, or fish food no more than twice a month. Humidity: 50% or more Water: Keep the plant wet at all times, using water that is low in salts and minerals, such as rain or distilled water. Temperature: 45-90°F, can tolerate 20°F in the winter, 0°F if grown in the ground. Dormancy: The plant will undergo a period of dormancy in the winter.
Sarracenia uses a unique mechanism to attract and trap its prey. It produces a lovely patch of sweet nectar at the base of the lid, luring insects with its alluring scent. Tiny downward-facing hairs encourage the insects to move down into the pitcher, where they eventually lose their footing and fall down the tube. The bug is then slowly converted into plant food through digestion by enzymes and bacteria.
A detailed grower's guide will be included with your purchase to ensure the successful cultivation of your Sarracenia. The plant is shipped potted to minimize the chance of damage during transit.
By providing the right growing conditions and understanding the plant's unique feeding mechanism, you can enjoy the beauty and natural pest control offered by this fascinating carnivorous species.
